Carlton Television 1982

In 1981, Tangent Industries, the parent company of Carlton Photography and Design, acquired Thames Television and decided to re-name the expanded company "Carlton Communications." From January 1st 1982, the familiar Thames skyline was replaced with this rather colourful ident, over which a synthesised jingle was played.

This is the end result. To satisfy the IBA's commitment to regional identity, the strapline "Television for London" was added beneath the logo.

The "Carlton Presents" slide, which was mainly used before Thames programmes made before the changeover to Carlton in 1982. The slide covered the old Thames ident and faded into it halfway through the animation. This special ident was used for showings of "Minder", "Rainbow", schools programmes and for the repeat of the 1979 series of "Rumpole of the Bailey". Eventually, this ident was replaced with the standard Carlton frontcap, and the Thames skyline was seen no more.

An improved version of the ident was unveiled in 1983. The animation concentrated on the blue bars to the left of the screen, but the jingle remained the same as the previous version. The strapline was dropped along with the box around the logo.

The ident was revamped in 1988 when the blue bars became computer animated. There was a new jingle, but final result remained the same as the 1983 ident. This is part of the form-up.

Carlton Television 1989

Carlton refused to use the 1989 ITV corporate logo, but introduced this new production slide in the ITV style. This was used until 1992.
