ITV Gibraltar 1962

In 1961, two companies, Gibraltar Broadcasting Corporation and Independent Television Gibraltar put in a bid for the Gibraltar franchise covering ITV's smallest and farthest region. Independent Television Gibraltar won the licence and began broadcasting as ITG from October 7th, 1962. This is their first ident, a static caption.

ITV Gibraltar 1968

The Picasso tuning signal for the Gibraltar region. To avoid interfering with Spanish TV transmissions, there was only one transmitter for the region, at Windmill Hill to the south-east of the peninsula.

A programme menu from 1967. ITN News bulletins were recorded onto videotape and flown out from London, arriving just in time for Gibraltar's bulletin an hour later, hence the tern "Newsfeed".

ITV Gibraltar 1968

ITG simplified its logo in 1968. It remained a still caption.

ITV Gibraltar 1974

ITG's startup slide from 1974. ITC and Channel were the last two station to adopt colour. This slide is rather sparse owing to the region's solitary transmitter.

The matching production slide. ITG's output for the network was minimal, notable programmes being occasional wildlife documentaries and holiday programmes.

ITV Gibraltar 1977

A programme menu from 1977. Broadcasting restrictions imposed IBA in accordance with an agreement with Spain meant that the normal ITV daytime schedule could not be covered.

ITV Gibraltar 1979

In 1979, ITG gave itself a new logo based on the Gibraltar flag. This ident was animated and carried with it an electronic jingle.

ITV Gibraltar 1987

A programme menu from 1987. As the rest of ITV entered a new age of 24-hour transmission, ITG's broadcasting hours had remained largely unchanged since 1962. There was no TV-am and from September 1987, ITG became the sole ITV company to carry Schools programmes, as Channel 4 was not available on the Rock.

ITV Gibraltar 1987

Gibraltar, like the other ITV regions, had its own local ORACLE magazine. The national magazine was fed to ITG by cable, where it was encoded and transmitted. This arrangement continued with Teletext Ltd after the 1992 franchise changes.

ITV Gibraltar 1988

The 1970s colour start-up slide continued to be used, despite the change of logo. Here it is from 1988.

ITV Gibraltar 1989

ITG adopted the ITV Corporate look in 1989. One of the Corporate image's most enthusiastic supporters, ITG took the opportunity to rename itself ITV Gibraltar for the occasion.

The corporate production slide. The new regional logo was nothing more than the "V" section of the generic logo coloured red.

ITV Gibraltar 1993

With the passing of the IBA, the transmitter came under the control of NTL. Here is the startup slide as seen in 1993. In 1994, satellite technology finally allowed ITV Gibraltar to become a 24-hour service, although the terrestrial frequency continued to be restricted in broadcasting hours.

ITV Gibraltar 1999

ITV Gibraltar finally ditched the 1989 Corporate ident in favour of the Hearts in 1999, an ident it still uses to this day.
